Slumber Party Success

Slumber parties are a celebrated tradition among youngsters. Proper planning makes the overnight event a success for the child host and attendees.

The first step in planning includes determining the number of children to invite. Inviting all of the same sex members of the child\’s class may be tempting but should be avoided unless the class size is very small. More than 6-8 children is too many. The host will feel spread thin in spending ample time with each guest. This makes emotions run high with the children and invites behavioral problems.

Once the date is set, invitations should be dispersed. For young children it is best to do a printed invitation allowing parents to read the party details. This eliminates the risk of information being incorrectly relayed. A list of what children need to bring should be included.

Children should bring sleeping bags, a pillow, night clothes and a change of clothes for the next day. Bringing their own sleeping bags and pillows from home is more comforting than using any extra blankets and pillows that may be available at the host\’s home. Encouraging children to bring a favorite game or toy is a good idea. Having a special item from home may eliminate feelings of homesickness.

Once the date of the slumber party arrives, it is vital the host has had a good night\’s sleep the evening before. During the day, furniture should be cleared, if necessary, in the area most of the action will take place. Food should be prepared and games and activities set up.

As children arrive, parents should fill out an information sheet listing contact information and any allergies or medical issues for the child. Ensure parents know the correct pick up time for the following day.

Once all the attendees are present, it is time to begin activities. The best end to the evening is serving popcorn and playing a movie. This allows the children to settle down and prepare for sleep.
