Christmas Family Activities

Christmas, and the entire holiday season, is the time of year for friends, family and loved ones to celebrate the season together. Though Christmas dinners are one way to spend quality family time together, plenty of other Christmas family activities exist to bring your brood closer together during the special holiday season.

Baking Christmas cookies, especially fun options such as cut outs and gingerbread men, can make for a fun family event; and one which can span an entire evening or throughout a weekend depending on how cookies and varieties you plan on making.

Creating a family greeting card together is another way to celebrate together. One idea is to have a family picture taken and then have each member of the family sign each Christmas card and include a personal note. Younger children can participate by drawing pictures to include in the cards or the family can craft their own cards using paper and other materials. This project gets everyone involved and sets the tone for the Christmas season being about family.

Gift giving is a common occurrence during Christmas, and though your family may buy gifts for every member; you can also change the concept and host a secret Santa gift exchange in your home as well. This activity is fun for families, especially when silly rules are set such as each gift must be created or crafted by using items found in the house and no one is allowed to spend any money on the gift or wrapping paper. This allows fun and creativity at the same time, and is simple enough that everyone in the family can participate.

Additional ways to spend time together and participate in Christmas family activities include driving around town together to look at Christmas lights, going out in to the woods together to pick and cut down a Christmas tree, decorating the family Christmas tree together, caroling throughout your neighborhood or volunteering as a family to feed those less fortunate at a local shelter or mission on Christmas Eve. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate Christmas, it is imperative that many of the activities are family oriented as Christmas time is a great season to catch up on spending time with one another.
